Christopher Brown

Chris is a writer and director. His short films have screened in festivals internationally, he has won several awards, and his work has been distributed on DVD and VOD.

Although Chris has worked in a diverse range of genres, his films and scripts focus on several common themes: unspoken desire, complex power relationships, and repressed sexuality. His work explores how identity and history shape human behaviour, and are often set in unusual or surreal locations.

In 2013, his feature script Knock-Out, a sports drama about a young boxer struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, won Best Screenplay at the London Independent Film Festival and the Cordelia Award for Best UK Screenplay at the BlueCat competition in LA.

In 2014, his psychological thriller Remission was nominated for the Iris Prize and the Best of British Award at the 2014 LGBT Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff, amongst other festival screenings. It was distributed on DVD and VOD in 2015 by Peccadillo Pictures, on their Boys on Film 13 collection, which peaked at No.1 on the amazon world cinema list. Remission is archived in the British Film Institute’s LGBT collection and available to rent via BFI Player and FilmDoo.

In 2015, Chris released Soap, an experimental black comedy set almost entirely in a bathtub. It screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, in their 'Great Performances' series which highlighted stellar acting, and won an honorable mention at the New Jersey International Film Festival, where it was described as 'a steamy film from England'.

In 2016, Chris won Best Screenplay at the 2016 Indian Cine Film Festival for Symptoms, a medical comedy-drama directed by Marianna Dean. The film was nominated for Best British Short at the Leeds International Film Festival, and for Best Foreign Film and Best Actress at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards.

Chris teaches and researches filmmaking at the University of Sussex and his articles have appeared in journals such as The Quarterly Review of Film & Video, Asian Cinema, Film Criticism, Media Practice and Education, and Senses of Cinema. In 2014 he edited, with Pam Hirsch, a collection of essays entitled The Cinema of the Swimming Pool, about how swimming pools are depicted in films.
